DoorDash just announced its own drone delivery program but I see it as something that will impact the labor market.

A lot of workers chose driving for DoorDash for the flexibility and means of income. You picked your hours, and no manager told you when to show up. Restaurants can’t compete with that.

Now some of that delivery work is going to drones. This is the first time in years restaurants have a chance to compete for workers without competing directly against the gig economy.

Demand for frontline workers isn’t going anywhere. The competitive advantage is shifting - it still matters, but the deciding factor is whether a job fits into someone’s life. Restaurants that solve that will have access to a much larger labor pool than those that don’t, and the operators who move first will have an advantage in the next decade.

AI and autonomy are removing labor from the transportation layer, making the frontline itself the next major employer. Ando will be with many of these workers as they seek their (re)entry into frontline work across many sectors of the economy.
